So much I wish I'd remembered...

It’s so sad to me how infrequently I am writing, but life gets busy…and my computer is soooo slooooww now that I always cringe at how much time is wasted waiting for it to load.  I feel sad about the things I know I will forget because they’re not written down.

So without wasting any more time, I need to update on what the kids have been up to!

Andrew’s really enjoying his preschool class.  I don’t know if I mentioned it in my ‘Mother’s Day’ post because he gave it to me a few days before, but in his class before Mother’s Day Andrew made me a mug with his handprint on it.  It was SO sweet the way he hid it behind his back till he got out of class but then couldn’t contain his excitement and had to give it to me right then and there.  I wasn’t expecting something like that, it’s such a sweet keepsake.

He’s still loving drawing a lot, and will sit for a good chunk of time at the dining room table and draw pictures and work on some of his sticker books.  He prefers if someone’s there with him, but he’s so much better now about doing things like that by himself for a decent amount of time, which is awesome.  He can count to 100 all by himself (although usually stops around 50 just because!)  His favourite number is 61.  Random, I know!  I have no clue why, but ‘61’ is his go to number for everything.  He’s going to accomplish a lot…in 61 years!!

The girls are of course changing really rapidly.  They’re 19 months and one week (as of tomorrow).  Emily is saying way more words now, and pronunciates really well when she wants to.  The past few days she goes around saying, ‘Hand, hand’, and holds out her hands and looks at them.  She says ‘ant’ for elephant, but also knows what ants are out in the yard.  Last week she picked up a wood bug in the backyard, and Margaret grabbed it out of her hand…and ate it!  I was absolutely horrified when I discovered what she was crunching on.  OMG it was nasty!!  I thought it was a piece of dried leaf or something but my mom saw it happen (before she could react) and said, ‘No, it’s a wood bug.’  I tried to get it out of her mouth but by then it was just a few legs and partial body.  GROSS.  She even had some stuck in her teeth!  I wanted to throw up.  LOL  Then the other day there was a centipede thing (black with yellow spots, not furry like a caterpillar but otherwise similar) and I was showing it to the girls and Emily looked at it and said, ‘Yummy?’  Aaaahhh!!!  My vegetarian babies want to eat bugs LOL!  I said, ‘Not yummy, just a bug!’  =D

We’ve been having so much great yard time, I absolutely LOVE having the front and back yards to go back and forth to.  This weekend I had more time away sans children than I have in I can’t remember how long…and one of the things I did was go to my bro and sil’s and pick up the slider chair for our patio that we’d meant to get from them last year but never got around to (because I had to take the middle bench out of the van to get it).  I set it all up nicely today and planted the herb garden stuff and a little lavender plant yesterday and in general I’m feeling really good about our yard space. I have actually been doing a bit better around the bug world, too.  Not to the point I’d get as close to them as Margaret did (!!!) but I’m not totally freaked out by all that’s out there either.  Although I still absolutely hate bugs and spiders and could quite nicely do without them (even though I know that wouldn’t actually work).

It’s not always super relaxing when we have outside time because I’ll go to sit in the reclining chair and the girls immediately see me trying to relax and nix that by climbing up on me, and fight each other to climb onto the other reclining chair.  Emily also refuses to only use the kid-sized broom we keep out there as a sweeping tool, and instead uses it as a weapon, either to soak in the pool with cold water and then fling the cold water at us when we least expect it, or to just flat out hit us with.  So that’s often confiscated, which leads to tears.  BUT we do have a lot of fun out there, and it’s just so great to be getting that fresh air and enjoying the sunshine.  I love being able to just go outside without having to bring anything with us, and then when we’ve had enough we just go inside.

On Saturday I was at first bummed out because I got a message that my hair dresser was sick and my appointment had to be moved to Sunday.  But it worked out, because James mom came over and James and I went out for a hike and then lemonade at a café nearby, just the two of us, before I went downtown despite my appointment being cancelled because I’d made plans with my brother around the hair cut since the salon is basically right where my brother lives.  We had a visit (my parents, bro and sil and I) and then went out for dinner to a vegetarian restaurant, which made me SO happy because I couldn’t believe my luck that literally everything on the menu just happened to be vegetarian – we hadn’t planned it out that way to go to a veggie place.  It felt amazing to actually have options that weren’t all just the same choices as always, I loved it.  Then on Sunday I got my hair cut, and then a few hours later my parents came over to look after the kids while James and I went out for dinner to a fancy Thai restaurant on West 4th with my aunt and uncle (who had invited us to go try it out).  It was sooo good (we LOVE Thai food) and then afterwards because the weather was so nice, we drove to Kits Beach and went for a stroll by the water, which was wonderful.  We’ve lived away from downtown for several years now and I know it makes a lot more sense for us to be where we are because we’d never get even half the square footage we have here living downtown, but I have to say I really miss being close to everything.  I miss having beaches close by, to think English Bay was essentially our backyard at one point in time…sigh.  I love it out here in the ‘burbs and it’s much quieter and roomier and I do really prefer it in a lot of ways, but oh to be right by the ocean again…

Anyway….this is a jumbled mess of writing but that’s what happens when I’ve literally written 2 posts in as many weeks…

Margaret I’ve noticed is starting to say ‘You’re welcome’, though it sounds more like, ‘eckom’, and she actually says it when what she really means to say is, ‘Thank you!’  LOL  It’s funny how the person with the kids the most knows what they’re saying even when it sounds nothing like what it should!  I just think it’s cute that she’s picking up on that, as Andrew says thank you and you’re welcome ALL the time.  Actually, he usually says, ‘I’m welcome’ when someone says, ‘Thank you’ to him!

Both girls mimic so much of what we say.  Margaret still says Andoo and Emily, Emily is now saying Emmy for her own name, and a few times has said An-dy for Andrew, but neither of them can say Margaret yet!  They usually both say ‘Moww, moww’ for Fifi but will call her Fifi sometimes, too.  Emily in particular bonds with Fifi by sitting beside her on the floor – in the winter it was by the heater vent, now they sit together by the back door!  We finally don’t have to put the cat dishes up anymore, and in fact they get really excited if I scoop out some cat food and let them put it into Fifi’s dish for her.

Anyway…on Monday (Victoria Day, yay for stat holidays and James being home) Andrew and I went out to Garden Works for our herb garden stuff, and then went and did the same hike James and I had done on Saturday (which is very steep and a good work out for me, something I am going to be doing more regularly for sure).  It felt great to get some good exercise this weekend, and spend so much time outside.

Writing this has made me realize that I really do need to figure out a time to jot things down each day, even if it’s just point form to jog my memory, because I’m forgetting all the things I really want to say.  I can recall several times in the past few days thinking, ‘Oh I’ve got to remember that’ about something the kids said or did, and I was so sure I WOULD remember, but I know I haven’t…I’ve really got to try harder on that!
