My rant about downloading

I know this is going to sound insane to most people, but I haven’t downloaded anything other than music (and even that has been a long time) for years.  The last time I downloaded a show was so long ago that it would take, like, 12 hours or more to download an hour long show, and you never knew if what it said you were downloading was indeed what you were after.  In fact, I believe the last thing I downloaded was an episode of LOST many years ago.

Last night I got James to show me again the process of downloading shows.  Yes, it had been so long that I didn’t remember what to do!  (He gets all our shows for us so I got used to not thinking about it).  While I think it’s awesome to be able to get all these shows (we now have access to Disney shows for Andrew – he’s smiling while watching Peter Pan right now!), I was very quickly reminded of what turned me away from downloading.

I don’t particularly enjoy attempting to download something only to see pictures of scantily clad women on the download pages.  I don’t enjoy banner ads for girls in bikinis on Facebook.  I find it particularly disturbing that these images pop up when I’m looking up G rated movies for my child!  I even had a box pop up from one site and I didn’t watch it long enough to find out what the girl was saying, but it was an actual VIDEO of a girl in a bikini.  It’s disgusting, and it makes me sad – but also VERY angry – that men actually enjoy that crap.  I mean, seriously, is your life SO sad that you can’t part yourself from sexualizing women for any length of time whatsoever, you must be looking at half naked women at all times so thank gawd it’s there for your viewing pleasure even while downloading totally unrelated shows???  It pisses me off and makes me want to throw up in my mouth (and that’s not the morning sickness talking!)

James isn’t the type of guy who gets off on this stuff – he actually was able to recommend some torrent sites to me that aren’t quite as gratuitous as some of the others, and warned me which ones to steer clear from entirely.  But even the ones that he said were tame are sexualizing women.  There don’t seem to be ANY that don’t.  I told him I don’t get it, and his reply was that while it sucks, ‘that’s the price you have to pay for getting free downloads.’  I personally don’t agree.  Why does THAT have to be the price?  I do get that there are a lot of pig-headed men out there – and don’t try to tell me that the guys who really like this stuff aren’t pig-headed because THEY ARE.  I honestly do believe that if you can’t even go online for 5 seconds without looking at half naked women, there’s something wrong with you.

I wish these sites didn’t have to be so one-sided.  Which is not to mean I’m wishing there were scantily clad man pictures out there!  LOL  Quite the contrary, I would prefer that if there have to be ads they were G rated and not derogatory toward women – or men, for that matter!  It just makes me not want to bother with the downloading of stuff because I get so angry when I see what’s out there, so what’s the point.  And that bugs me, because downloading shows shouldn’t be a man’s domain!  It should be created more equal.

I guess it disheartens me that this aspect of it hasn’t improved in the YEARS since I last downloaded anything.
